15-0202 v2.1/Okanagan/College Trades Renewal and Expansion Project/Location of Agriculture (Part I)

QUESTION

Our client has an opportunity to secure a parcel of land off-site for the purposes of developing a community garden and use for agriculture for the College. We require clarification if the college is required to own this parcel of land, or if a signed agreement (lease) is adequate to meet with the intent of the imperative.

ANSWER

Part I Yes, a signed lease agreement is acceptable for scale jumping to a community garden, as long as the lease terms are for at least 15 years. Please note, the portion of the garden that counts towards the project urban agriculture requirement must meet all the imperatives the project is pursuing, including Net Zero Water, Red List, and Appropriate Sourcing.
