16-0728 v3.1/Data 2/Polyvinyl Alcohol in Siding Material

QUESTION

We are looking at a building siding material for our project. The EPD lists Polyvinyl Alcohol as 3.5% of the ingredient make-up. The Materials Red List includes Polyvinyl Chloride, Polyvinylidene Chloride, but not Polyvinyl Alcohol. Please advise if Polyvinyl Alcohol fibres as a binding agent is acceptable per the requirements of the Red List Imperative.

ANSWER

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is not on the Red List. Therefore, products containing PVA are compliant with Imperative 10 as long as they do not contain any other ingredients on the Red List. Please note that I10-2 Supporting Data is still required as part of basic documentation.
