15-0107 v3.X Lead in Solar Battery Systems

Question:

The Cully Adopt-a-Spot project will use solar-powered light fixtures with integral batteries to meet the energy imperative. The only manufacturer that currently can meet the desired light levels uses lead batteries. Exception I10-E7 2/2009 in the materials petal handbook states that "some lead is allowed in solar battery systems." How much lead is allowed and how is this measured? Please advise. Thanks!

Answer:

Yes, this solar battery system is allowed. Solar battery systems all include some amount of lead. The team should source the lowest lead content that meets functional criteria for the project. Per the 2.1 May 2013 Materials Petal Handbook (MPH pg 11) , the team must show proof of advocacy through a letter to the manufacturer to find an
alternative to lead in their products.
