The current definition, stated in the May 2017 LBC 3.1 Place Petal Handbook (page 27), of gross building area is: "The area of the building from the outside of exterior walls, excluding unenclosed exterior spaces such as decks, patios, or balconies."

This definition is being modified to clarify that structured parking is considered part of the gross building area:

November 7, 2019 update

Gross building area: The area of the building from the outside of exterior walls, excluding unenclosed exterior spaces such as decks, patios, or balconies. Surface parking and landscape work is excluded from gross building area. Structured parking is included in gross building area.
